Bombardier has released an environmental product declaration (EPD) for its Challenger 650 aircraft and now has one for its entire range of in-production aircraft. This EPD, which analyses the environmental impact of a product over its life cycle, has been published nearly a year ahead of the Canadian manufacturer's target to complete EPDs for all in-production aircraft by 2025.

How has bombardier addressed environmental concerns?

Bombardier made significant strides in the business jet industry by obtaining the first environmental product declaration (EPD) for the Global 7500 in 2020. This EPD was created through the International EPD System, which features a library of declarations from products across more than 30 countries, aimed at promoting transparency regarding environmental life cycles. Verified by third parties to meet international ISO standards, the EPD provides comprehensive details about a product's impact from raw materials to end-of-life, including metrics such as CO2 emissions, noise levels, water consumption, and other important environmental indicators.

Bombardier’s sustainability ?

In alignment with its goal to lead sustainable business aviation through the creation of innovative and environmentally responsible products, Bombardier's initiative to develop Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its business jets aimed to analyze their life cycles against various environmental impact indicators. This effort was designed to gather crucial information for minimizing their environmental footprint across all stages of the value chain.

Bombardier began this scientific analysis during the development of the industry-leading, high-performance Global 7500 aircraft. This effort evolved into a transparency initiative when the Global 7500 became the first business jet to receive a third-party verified EPD in 2020. Following this, Bombardier published a self-declared EPD for the Challenger 3500 in 2022, and for the Global 5500 and Global 6500 in 2023, culminating in the recent publication for the Challenger 650.

A spokesperson for Bombardier, Jean-Christophe Gallagher, Executive Vice President, Aircraft Sales & Bombardier Defense, Bombardier has stated:

“The role of EPDs is not to stamp our aircraft as more sustainable than others—rather, to take ownership of the environmental impact they generate,” explained Jean-Christophe Gallagher, executive v-p of aircraft sales and Bombardier Defense. “For clients, these reports can be easily consulted like any other spec document. The same way we provide factual information about the unmatched width of the Challenger 650 aircraft’s cabin in its category or its leading dispatch reliability, Bombardier publicly provides factual information on the environmental impact of its business jets.”

What does this mean for Bombardier?

Bombardier has become the first business jet manufacturer to disclose the scientifically analyzed environmental impact of its entire product portfolio. The release of an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for the Challenger 650 business jet marks a significant milestone in Bombardier's commitment to develop and publish EPDs for all its in-production aircraft by 2025.

All of Bombardier's business jet EPDs are publicly accessible on the company's website, providing information on various aspects, including the CO2 emissions generated throughout the value chain—from raw material extraction to the aircraft's end-of-life.

EPDs are a key component of Bombardier’s comprehensive environmental strategy, enabling the company and its partners to actively reduce the environmental impact of their products. The publicly accessible EPDs for all in-production business jets highlight Bombardier’s commitment to authenticity and innovation in business aviation, reflecting the transparency the company fosters with its clients.
