Why is World Environment Day crucial for your business?

Why is it crucial to understand this for your business?

This day represents the largest internationally recognised day for the environment. Headed by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), it has been around since 1973. This day continues to celebrate its longstanding tradition of being the largest global platform for environmental connection, and engagement.

Recognised by millions all around the world, World Environment Day is integral to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals ascribed to by Australia and the other 190 United Nations member states. This year the celebration will be hosted in Saudia Arabia. The subject of land restoration takes a front seat, as it’s an essential foundation for protecting and revitalising the World’s ecosystems.

The action exemplified this day is the sort of action and leadership that is fundamental to surviving our climate crisis, decreasing our biodiversity risk, and the other significant threats that are mirrored worldwide. Rapid climate change is placing strain on the world’s ecosystems, the planet’s population and half of global GDP, with the poor being disproportionately affected.

As nations around the globe pledge to restore a billion hectares (an area that exceeds the size of China). This World Environment Day the momentum built creating such restoration goals will be channelled for the better, as the world weathers the storm of droughts and floods.

What can your business do?

There are many different cost-effective ways your business can celebrate the 2024 World Environment Day!

As a business owner, you can lead by example and as such, resonate with consumers. A recent study published by IBM has indicated that 8/10 people are informed by sustainability considerations when making purchases. This rise in the ‘sustainable consumer’ means that sustainability should be at the forefront of your business planning through transparent and credible assertions. Finding ways to incorporate environmentally-friendly behaviours into your business means you care about what the consumer wants, and you are able to incorporate such feedback. This also means being aware of greenwashing, and avoiding it.

Reducing your carbon footprint is key for sustainable business operations.

As we have said, going green doesn’t mean going broke.

By calculating your businesses’ carbon footprint you can be part of the solution.
