Rising Water Temperatures

The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted that part of Australia’s Tasman Sea could rise by at least 2.5˚C above average from the months of September to February.

Oceanographer Grant Smith has stated “We didn’t account for anomalies that high when we developed this ... it could be 3˚C, it could be 3.5˚C, but we can’t see how high it goes.”

The south-east is renowned for being a climate change hotspot, with water temperatures rising four times faster when compared universally. The marine life mortality in this area is rising drastically, with sea life suffering more than ever. In particular, catch mortality of Salmon has risen severely.

Alistair Hobday, the Research Director of CSIRO has stated “The east Australian current brings warm water south and then also the rising atmospheric temperature cooks it at the same time.”

Rich Little, from the CSIRO, stated that scientists have been researching to determine the degree to which changes in the sea ecosystem were caused by climate crisis and burning fossil fuels and other factors.

In 2016 the area experienced 250 days of marine heatwave causing irreparable damage to marine life.
