Europe’s first carbon-reduced cat food is being offered by Nestlé.

Nestlé Purina PetCare Europe has conducted a Life Cycle Assessment in order to determine that their newest cat food offering has a reduced carbon footprint when compared with their other cat food. Nestlé is committed to achieving a 50% reduction in their emissions by 2030.

The marketing director for Purina Europe; Fabio Degli Esposti, has stated the following: “At Purina, we’re committed to producing healthy, nutritious pet food that you can trust that’s not all… We believe the health of our environment is as important as providing high-quality pet food products. Purina ONE DualNature is the first Purina product range that has announced a reduction of its carbon footprint, but it’s just the beginning. Purina Europe is striving to contribute towards Nestlé’s wider ambition of reducing its CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030.”

“Our journey goes on and we’ll be working to further reduce our greenhouse gas emissions over the coming time, so that pet owners can confidently choose products that contribute positively to both their pets and the environment,” Esposti added.

According to Nestlé the new cat food offerings have a 15.7% reduction in carbon footprint when compared to Nestlé’s 2019 baseline. Such deductions are based on a LCA undertaken by Nestlé. A LCA measures the cat food’s environmental impact based on a number of predetermined factors.

In an attempt to work towards a more sustainable Nestlé, the company has purchased renewable electricity in order to produce its pet food. In addition, the company has decided to use mono-material bags which are made from 40% recycled plastic, as an alternative to the usual virgin plastic. Such decisions are a bid to align with the company’s goals to convert at “least 95% of its packaging to recyclable options by 2025.”

Moreover, the new Purina range will be transported in a more sustainable way, by utilising both rail and road systems where available.
