Summer in Western Australia: it’s summer, it’s hot but should we really be “getting over it?”

The Western Australia (WA) town of Carnarvon has surpassed its previous heat record, with temperatures hitting above 49C.

Hot summers are the usual in Australia, with many people taking the attitude of it’s hot, it’s summer, get over it. However, with temperatures souring to 49C the heat is unusually high, and for the residents of Carnarvon, WA unbearable.

With the hottest February on record, WA is experiencing an intense heatwave. The sand itself would have been “20 to 30 degrees hotter than the air” making the experience of being at the beach extremely uncomfortable. Perth has hit 40C for the sixth time in a month. Whilst this is very high, and will continue to be, the fact that most of these situations were coastal makes it even more shocking.

In Geraldton it was recorded as hot as 49.3C which has beat the previous record for the town since 1877, whilst Shark Bay hit 49.8C, Carnarvon topped the highest temperature at 49.9C.

But how hot is 49.9C?

This is a temperature which can cause a high risk of “heat stress and exhaustion”. Such weather is unbearable.

The Bureau of Meteorology had stated that the 49.9C heatwave at Carnarvon is “Australia’s equal eighth hottest recorded temperature, and the second highest recorded in February”.
