The road to carbon neutral certification | DrugWaste International case study

DrugWaste International is a leader in the management of surplus medicines. Their medical customers, such as leading hospitals, use DrugWaste bins to dispose of leftover drugs from syringes, white tablets, etc. Using DrugWaste bins means that chemicals used in the healthcare industry are managed in such a way that they cannot cause environmental contamination or be misappropriated. Additionally, the cardboard and plastic packaging from medicines that might previously have been burned as a precautionary measure can now be introduced into standard waste streams for recycling.

DrugWaste International decided to go beyond the excellent outcomes already being achieved and to analyse, quantify, and prioritise their path to Net Zero. Their new internationally recognised 'On the Path to Net Zero' certification is based on an extensive company-wide Carbon Life Cycle Assessment and aligns with global best practice.

Calculating the Carbon Footprint for DrugWaste International

In order for DrugWaste International to understand their Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Carbon LCA Certified conducted a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). An LCA calculates all the business activities and products that DrugWaste International uses or conducts and calculates their impact on the environment. An LCA quantifies the effects of business activities that DrugWaste International performs to run its business and produce its products (waste bins). The results were then calculated by a professional, in this case, Dr Les, who personally oversaw the Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions calculation for DrugWaste International.

The DrugWaste International LCA was carried out per ISO 14040-14044, which are the predominant global standards governing LCAs.

DrugWaste International's LCA contained the following:

  • Definition of objectives and scope

  • Life Cycle Inventory - material & energy used, and generated emissions

  • Impact assessment

  • Interpretation of results

  • Recommendations in order to become Net Zero

DrugWaste International's investment in a Carbon Life Cycle Assessment and their 'On the Path to Net Zero' certification is one of very few sustainability accolades that actually mean something. They have created a data-informed, evidence-based roadmap to Net Zero, and are positioned to continue leading their industry with ever more sustainable, ethical, and effective operational processes.
