World Rainforest Day: What’s all the fuss about?
June 22, 2024: The Year of Action
This June 22, World Rainforest Day celebrates the importance of healthy rainforests for biodiversity, the climate, and livelihoods.
What does World Rainforest Day have to do with the climate?
World Rainforest Day celebrates the importance of rainforests and their role in maintaining weather patterns, facilitating ecosystem services, absorbing carbon dioxide, and releasing oxygen back into the atmosphere. The world's rainforests are essential for climate regulation, and 50% of the planet's biodiversity is located in rainforests.
This in turn assists in fighting climate change.
How did it start?
World Rainforest Day began in 2017. It was founded by a group that worked alongside Indigenous Peoples who live in rainforests to involve local communities in initiatives to restore and regenerate rainforests. This day focuses predominantly on the importance of rainforests. By asserting action this year, World Rainforest Day takes a hopeful approach to protecting and preserving the rainforest.
Why has the Rainforest Day partnership been so successful?
The day has been celebrated as a success as it focuses on a unified response to combat the effects of deforestation by partnering with organisations that can make a difference. The Partnership is a part of the UN Economic and Social Council. In addition, the Rainforest Partnership advises on sustainable practices centred around ecology and collective action.
June 22 is a day to stop and appreciate rainforests and recognise the detriment inflicted on the ecosystem's equilibrium due to deforestation, tourism, and logging. Preserving the world's rainforests and ensuring we have a climate-stable future can only be ensured if we all recognise how imperative it is that we all collectively take action to ensure sustainable practices and facilitate legislation that supports and conserves these precious resources. The need to sustain life and preserve this life is becoming more urgent. Sustainability continues to be at the forefront of all our minds as we observe new and innovative ways to sustain rainforests.
World Rainforest Day centres around raising awareness of the need to protect these essential ecosystems. This awareness is the fuel needed to create change and preserve them. It is a call to action for all to save our rainforests and preserve these significant ecosystems for future generations.
